The Cheese Factory

The Montesdeoca Cheese Factory continues to maintain the traditions and customs inherited from our ancestors with the sole objective of guaranteeing the authentic flavor, texture and aroma of a handmade cheese.

We have managed to transfer these ethics to the flavor of our cheese through the daily effort. Maybe that’s why many cheesemakers have already decided to reward our work by awarding prizes to our cheeses both within our borders and abroad.

The Montesdeoca Cheese Factory has received a total of 66 awards of which 41 are international: 1 in World Championship Cheese Contest 2018, 6 in International Cheese Awards, 10 in Global Cheese Awards and 24 in the World Cheese Awards, obtaining awards in all editions since its first participation in this contest in 2010. At Salón de Gourmets national gastronomic fair Montesdeoca semi-cured cheese was proclaimed Spain’s third best smoked cheese in 2017. Quesería Montesdeoca also has achieved 21 island awards and 3 corporate awards.

These awards are the result of the experience acquired since our inception in 1984. For more than three decades this dairy products have been sold in the exhibitors of small and medium businesses in the Canary Islands, preserving and improving the quality and traceability of our cheeses. from feeding our animals to the consumer’s table.

Our History

The history of the Montesdeoca cheese factory is the story of three generations of farmers who, in the context of a small family farm, attend to their three basic tasks: the production of goat milk, its subsequent transformation into cheese and / or its derivatives and last its marketing. .

The history of the Montesdeoca cheese factory begins in 1984 from the island of La Palma, when Doña Ángeles Nieves García Rodríguez and her husband, Don Leoncio Jesús Montesdeoca Acosta, are betting on a new activity; the making of goat cheese. With the help and experience of Don Leoncio Gregorio Montesdeoca, who since 1963 was dedicated to raising cattle, they started with a small free-ranging goat farm and a small cheese factory where they worked milk from their own flock. It was not until 1993 when the small family business moved to Tenerife hoping to prosper in the neighboring island.

The Cheese factory was incorporated as a limited company in July 2015. In this recent stage of the company, it was the third generation, Alberto and Daniel Montesdeoca, who took over the management and distribution of the company. Today, the Montesdeoca cheese factory works with 16 families of farmers in the south of the island, maintaining and giving value to a product as noble and beloved as the Canarian goat cheese.

Collaborating with the popular knowledge of these farmers and artisan cheese makers, the philosophy of Montesdeoca has been to collect the witness of the traditions to perfect their recipes implementing continuous advances in the livestock sector and dairy industry, knowing how to integrate the changes of the demanding regulations European Union in an agrarian environment as characteristic and peculiar as that of our islands.

In the last 8 years, the Montesdeoca Cheese Factory has received constant international, national and regional awards that undoubtedly reflect a high degree of technology, commitment and enthusiasm. Maybe it helps a lot that few things are so rewarding professionally as making healthy and quality products for our people, neighbors and more and more tourists who enjoy every day Montesdeoca products.

In Montesdeoca we have been growing progressively with a philosophy oriented towards the excellence of the final product in terms of its production and marketing. Shaping a family and business project that dignifies the work of the field within a society that walks in some cases with its back to this small but great agrarian world.

We have surprised the most refined palates across several continents while receiving, over the past nine years, 41 international awards, 24 of which have been awarded in the prestigious World Cheese Awards competition.

The quality of our cheeses, certified by the Instituto Canario de Calidad Agroalimentaria, has made Montesdeoca products a reference of insular scope. Proof of this are our awards to the “Best Cheese of Tenerife” granted in 2014, 2018 and 2019 by the Tenerife Contest Cheese Competition. In 2015 we had the honour of receiving the Tenerife Rural Prize for “Innovative and Sustainable Business Initiative in the Rural Environment”. This business distinction would be followed by five others awarded by the City Council of Los Llanos de Aridane, the City Council of Adeje, the Cultural Association Pinolere, the Cabildo de Tenerife and the Government of the Canary Islands.

The humbleness of daily effort, the commitment with quality and the eagerness to improve continuously has taken Montesdeoca Artisan Cheese Factory to be awarded in the last nine editions of the contest World Cheese Awards since its first participation in 2010.

Therefore, Montesdeoca is proud to be distinguished as the most internationally awarded cheese factory in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
